Harry Nilsson sings the theme song "Waiting" which poignantly recalls the young heroine's wait for the arrival of her fatherless child, and the anxiety of a young man awaiting news from the draft board that will decide if he must serve the US Army in Vietnam. She wants a father for the baby. He wants to avoid the draft by marrying Jenny. Delano, the man, played by Alan Alda, suggests a marriage-of-convenience, but love inconveniently upsets their plans. Jenny is a modern romance set against the moral confusion of young Americans in the closing years of the Vietnam War.
