Double Play features two of the screen's most popular stars - Maggie Smith as Lily Winn, a successful script writer, and Christopher Plummer as Fitz, her actor-husband. Fitz is generally first choice for Lily's male leads and he's insulted when she reveals that the part of a soft spoken Italian in her latest screenplay is going to someone else, as yet unchosen. So Fitz sets to scheming. With the help of a makeup man, a hairdresser and a smattering of broken English, he auditions as Roberto Terranova and an unwitting Lily casts him as her leading man. Filming begins and all is well on the set until Lily falls for Roberto. Beneath the disguise Fitz is fuming. A secret rendezvous between the screen writer and her star is the final straw! Fitz abandons first Roberto, then Lily and finally the film. But only one of them for good...
