Synopsis

The great violinist Holger Brandt (LESLIE HOWARD) is attracted to lovely Anita Hoffman (INGRID BERGMAN), who is his accompanist Thomas Stenborg's (JOHN HALLIDAY) protegé [sic] and his own daughter's piano teacher. At a party they play an "intermezzo"" together, and when they meet a few days later, they realise they are strongly attracted to each other. Brandt is happily married but soon finds that his love for Anita is so powerful and overwhelming that he abandons his wife and family to be with her. Ingrid Bergman's performance opposite Leslie Howard still shimmers with warmth and grace which makes one of the famous love stories of all time elegantly simple and beautifully played.
