Synopsis

Suspected arson in the black ghetto of a large American city explodes in conflict

A young black recruit and an angry white veteran clash in an atmosphere of fear and hatred.

Richard Roundtree (of Shaft fame) stars as Shelly Forsythe a tough young trainee fireman who joins a team of top firefighters, Engine Company 33, during a spate of fatal, deliberately set fires in the black ghetto areas of a major American City. In addition to the terror Shelly has to face in fighting these raging destructive fires he also has to face unrelenting racial intimidation from his fellow firefighters. His principal antagonist is Spike Ryerson (Vince Edwards) a popular veteran who sees Shelly as a scapegoat for his anger after the fires have claimed the lives of numerous firemen in allowing a suspected black arsonist to escape, Shelly only adds to his problems…
