The story of a band of astronauts whose time travelling ship arrives on a strange planet approximately 2 millennia in the future. It was always the opening sequence which grabbed me as Taylor (Charlton Heston) makes his final checks before their spaceship goes into hyperspace. He poses some philosophical questions about life and mankind as it is, before going into a drug induced deep sleep - it's so well done and ties in so perfectly with the rest of the story. Once the crew crash land on the 'Planet of the Apes', the film throws everything at you; action, drama, adventure, love, violence, comedy and mystery all of which, for the large part, is set in an ape enclave. It's wonderfully shot, sets are superb and costumes and props are second to none. All this goes to make an almost perfect, timeless, science fiction film and despite its outlandish premise, you're convinced it could happen in the future!
