Synopsis

This is the classic story of one of the greatest romantic heroes of all time. Based on the famous novel by Baroness Orczy (and later turned into a very successful play [sic] it is a tale of heroism and adventure as the intrepid Scarlet Pimpernel - alias Sir Percy Blakeney - snatches French aristocrats in breathtaking escapes from death under the guillotine. Alexander Korda's usual attention to period detail and authenticity is here employed with great effect as the action shifts between rural England and the turbulent streets of Paris. The whole production was a triumph for the British film industry and consolidated Korda's position of preeminence among the movie moguls. As the "Sunday Times" critic wrote: "This old-time and popular favourite of the theatre becomes under the supervision of Mr. Alexander Korda not merely revitalised and renovated, but an excitingly new and splendid revolutionary romance with fresh individuality and fascination." High praise too has been forthcoming for Leslie Howard in the title role: "His Blakeney is a perfect gem, exquisite in grace and diction, gossamer-light in the modish fooling, strong enough to make the fellow's heroic exploits credible." ("Daily Telegraph").
