Synopsis

With guests SUSANNAH YORK, JOHN SCHLESINGER, PATRICIA MEDINA, MICHAEL BROADBENT
Robert Carrier is the most famous writer on food in the world today - and with good reason. His expertise is beyond question, with both his restaurants starred by Michelin, and his books are generous with the practical knowledge he has gained. Now all his charm, enthusiasm and skill are available on video in the series Food, Wine and Friends. In each of the four programmes which go to make up a cassette he prepares and cooks for us a particular dish, visits one of the great vineyards of Europe to show us what to look for (and what to avoid) when buying a wine, and finally introduces us to one of his equally famous friends, some of whom demonstrate their own kitchen skills. Much more than just a how-to-cook series, Food, Wine and Friends, is Robert Carrier's urbane introduction to a whole new way of living. Volume 2: In this second volume of programmes, Robert Carrier gives instruction on how to cook with wine and prepares a delicious Bœuf Bourguignon; how to steam vegetables and make a Chinese-style chicken dish in under twenty minutes; and how to prepare some interesting variations on a basic Béchamel sauce. Finally, he shows us his method of baking en papillote. In the wine section we travel to Bordeaux, Brouilly, Beaune and the Côte de Nuits for a glimpse of the vines which produce such prestigious wines as Château Lafite-Rothschild, Château Haut Brian, Château d'Yquem and Romanée-Conti. We also learn something of Napoleon's drinking habits, meet a glamorous lady wine-grower, and enjoy an impromptu lesson in wine-tasting, al fresco. Finally. we meet Patricia Medina (renowned for her performance in The Killing of Sister George) over a toast of Revolution (red wine and cassis); receive advice from that eminent Master of Wine and director of Christie's auction house, Michael Broadbent, on how to establish a modest cellar; enjoy a Burgundian picnic in the delightful company of Susannah York and a glass of champagne with one of the most influential film directors of today - John Schlesinger.
