Laura Farr, Delania Raffino, a beautiful writer and photographer, travels to France to visit the mysterious Marguerite Heller, Gloria Leonard, an expatriate American who has a reputation for producing bizarre sado-erotic photographs based on scenes she stages with her entourage of students and followers. Laura is writing the introduction to a book about Marguerite's Life. Soon after her arrival, Laura's visit takes an unexpected turn as she is swept into the strange world of Marguerite's erotic obsessions. Orgiastic photo sessions, recurring nightmares about an automobile accident, odd "events" that occur without warning, doubts about her love for her husband in her "safe" marriage, all cause Laura to become disoriented, as if she is living in a dream. Laura has a passionate affair with Jonathan, John C. Holmes, Marguerite's lover and assistant, and falls in love with him. Should she stay with Jonathan or return to the security of her marriage? She decides to leave, but changes her mind at the last minute and drives back to Marguerite's chateau only to witness an automobile accident in which Jonathan is killed. In anguish over her missed opportunity Laura drives away, back to Paris and the plane to America. There are no second chances. But... is Jonathan really dead... or was the accident only a staged scenario organised by Marguerite? Laura will never know...
