Synopsis

SHE'S BROKE. HE'S WASHED UP. THEY'RE MADE FOR EACH OTHER. Can a perfume manufacturer find happiness managing the long-shot career of a retired prize fighter, who, to put it bluntly, stinks? That's the question this screwball comedy answers and screwball is the right word for it! Barbra Streisand plays Hillary Kramer, a successful perfume entrepreneur whose business manager has just split for South America with most of her tangible assets. One asset he overlooked - or purposely ignored - was the contract of handsome ex-fighter named Eddie "Kid Natural" Scanlon. Scanlon played by Ryan O'Neal has no intention of getting back in the the ring. But Streisand has no intention of starving, so she threatens a breach of contract suit. So, O'Neal of puts on his gloves, and gloves, and with Streisands [sic] guidance, gets his brains knocked out. 'The Main Event' continues with the same mixture of knockabout comedy and hit and miss romance, as this unlikely couple struggle to reach the top of the world of boxing.
