Insatiable Alicia and the Marquis

Albagran | Spain | 1982

Catalonian Alfonso Balcázar (directing here under the concatenated pseudonym Albagran) is more celebrated for his prolific Spaghetti Western output from the 1960s than anything else, but at the end of his career he tried his hand at the “Clasificada S” market, making five sexually explicit movies all in the same year. In reality, Balcázar shot a modest amount of footage — featuring more or less the same cast, and inventively squeezed out five similarly themed features (albeit with some overlapping of footage): Las Lesbianas y La Caliente Niña Julieta; El Marqués, La Menor y El Travestí; Colegialas Lesbianas y El Placer De Pervertir; Las Viciosas y La Menor and La Ingenua, La Lesbiana y El Travestí. Given the film’s origin, it’s not surprising to find it’s a fairly cheap affair, with a very flimsy storyline framing the multiple sexual encounters, but nothing untypical for the dubbed Eurosmut canon.

Attractive short-haired brunette Alicia (Concha Valero, who before her death in 2006, dubbed amongst others, Courtney Cox’s character in TV sitcom Friends), arrives at the country home of the ‘Marquis’ (Jorge Batalla) on the pretext of purchasing several horses. Her real motive is to try to snag a share of the Marquis’ fortune by tricking him into making her pregnant — the whole scam having been dreamt up and coordinated by her domineering uncle (Joaquín Gómez), the Marquis’ very own butler.

Immediately upon arrival she gets the hots for John the stableman (James Garci), and within five minutes of screen time, the pair are involved in a steamy outdoor romp. The Marquis however, has his eye and his heart firmly fastened on the delectable Claudia (Andrea Albani), who he constantly tries to disrobe for his amateur photography hobby. The film continues thus, padded out with spontaneous sexual escapades — some in flashback form — all featuring sickly sweet music poured over the action like maple syrup on pancakes. There’s an amusing sideline involving Claudia and her attempts to conceal her transexuality from the Marquis, but this can’t detract from the fact that the film has a knocked together air about it, exemplified by a pair of sandaled feet (presumably a crew member) wandering into shot during one of the many sexual couplings!

A brace of the five films was bought for UK cinema distribution by Eagle Films in 1985: Insatiable Alicia and the Marquis plus Sexual Desires (aka Las Viciosas y La Menor). Both were frowned upon by the BBFC, with Alicia being hit for 5m 19s of cuts before being granted an ‘18’ certificate.

The (then) newly formed Elephant Video chose Alicia as their premiere release in Autumn of 1986, and true to form, the BBFC were not satisfied with the cuts already made to the cinema version, requesting a further 6m 32s of cuts before finally granting an ‘18’ certificate for the video market. Judged too strong for UK audiences, the BBFC cut out many explicit scenes including all instances of tribadism, medium close-ups of prolonged lesbian cunnilingus and enthusiastic female vaginal frottage.

This inauspicious start marked the beginning of an adverse relationship with the BBFC, with over 60% of Elephant Video’s output requiring mandatory cuts before release.
