Norman J.Warren, the good-looking supply teacher of British exploitation, unexpectedly scored a number one box office hit with his effective, if nonsensical shocker Terror (1979), a low-budget attempt at duplicating the hallucinatory excesses of Dario Argento. For his next horror outing, Norm decided to attempt to duplicate Ridley Scott's smash hit Alien, on a similarly meagre budget with Chislehurst Caves standing in for an alien planet. If you like trash cinema, all well and good, if not, this isn't likely to be your cup of slime. The main talking point of the film - apart from Warren's trademark hilarious misanthropy which sees virtually every character getting wiped out in an impressively lurid manner - is still the scene where Judy Geeson gets raped on what looks like a disco dancefloor by a huge lobster-like alien monstrosity with a glass test tube penis which pumps her full of meatballs and pea soup. Not surprisingly, this sends her batshit insane and it's her fearless, fevered performance that carries the film from this point onwards - although, if I'm honest, Stephanie Beacham in her underwear was enough to keep me watching. Surprisingly well shot and directed, Inseminoid retains its sleazy cult status, and stands alongside Logan's Run and Westworld as a definitively clunky, low-tech, seventies-infused view of the future.
