The question of who is responsible for a series of brutal rapes and murders in a small American town suddenly changes to ‘what’ is responsible when the local doctor, Sam Cordell starts to investigate. He unearths an old register of people tried for witchcraft in the town’s early days which points to the existence of an Incubus — a creature which assumes the human form when propagating its own horrible species. Circumstances lead the doctor to make all the wrong conclusions but in an excrutiatingly suspenseful climax, he finds his agonising answer in those to whom he is closest.
