Florence is a girl with a modern outlook. She is attractive and never short of admirers. But she refuses to marry and settle down to ordinary middle-class respectability. She is not a feminist, but she is convinced that men and women are equal and she wants to liver her life free from restrictions of any kind, to be available, and above all not to allow herself to be dominated by any man. Like most young people today, she is not worried by complexes and sexual taboos; like men, she claims the right to make love with anyone she likes and not concern herself with affairs of the heart. Since she is beautiful and intelligent she has a good choice of partners and can easily find one whenever she wants. And yet, despite all her fine theories, she realises one day that in practice freedom is not as easy or as satisfying as she imagined.
