In september [sic] 1599 Beatrice Cenci is condemned to death for having arranged the death of her father Francesco. He had been such a perverse and unscrupulous man that he had been obliged to flee from Rome with all his family. When he dies the Cenci family is denounced by the Curia and a young man confesses under torture that Beatrice and her mother ordered him to commit the crime. Beatrice admits that she wanted to revenge on [sic] her father who violated her as a child and continued to abuse her. The Roman people felt deep sorrow at this tragedy and hence venerated her as a saint.
