Synopsis

At midnight on the 14 August 1947, an event took place that would change the world. That moment marked the dawn of Independence for India, the birth of Pakistan and the end of the British Raj - the last days of the greatest empire in history. The circumstances surrounding that epoch-marking event, the conflicts, the intrigues, the pomp, the ceremony, are the theme of MOUNTBATTEN - THE LAST VICEROY. The seemingly impossible task of bringing about Independence fell on the shoulders of a remarkable men, Lord Louis Mountbatten. Faced with group of hugely influential and charismatic men - Pandit Nehru, Mohammed Ali Jinnah and Mahatma Gandhi - he had to find a way to resolve irreconcilable differences and formulate a plan for Partition agreeable to all parties. On 24 March 1947 Mountbatten was sworn in as the last Viceroy of India. Mountbatten determined that the last days of the Raj should be no less spectacular than its glorious heyday. The magnificence of his investiture would show India that he was Viceroy with real power. That power was to be tested to the full in the months ahead.
