Steven Spielberg directs this ground-breaking, award-winning and genre-defining masterpiece of horror and suspense. The quiet summer town of Amity is turned upside down by a deadly ocean menace - a giant Great White Shark - which has "staked a claim" in the surrounding waters, chewing its way through several townsfolk. Continuously burying their collective heads in the sand however is Larry Vaughn, the town's gibbering Mayor, who together with his entourage of nay-sayers plays ignorance in favour of raking-in the "summer dollars". Enter Police Chief Brody, a former New York City police officer, who soon calls in help from the 'mainland' in the form of Matt Hooper, a young and cocky oceanologist who examines the remains of Amity's first victim, Chrissy Watkins, before identifying her remains as that of being victim to a "shark attack." While the death toll continues to rise, so too does Larry's efforts to ignore the obvious, while Quint, a local and "colourful" shark fisherman with a remarkable personal history, is inevitably hired to kill the shark. In the tradition of the classic Herman Melville tale of Moby Dick, the trio of shark hunters (Quint, Brody and Hooper) set off "out to sea," to destroy the toothy critter and restore Amity's safe haven and make it the peaceful retreat for families to vacation once more. With its instantly recognizable soundtrack ("dum, dah-dum... dah-dum") and based on the best-selling novel by Peter Benchley, Spielberg inadvertently created a masterpiece here; the sum by which all other films of its type would be judged. And millions of viewers and fans world-wide will forever think twice before stepping back into the water.
