On a rainy day in the south of France, Mellie [Marlene Jobert] is followed home by a strange man who viciously rapes her. When he returns to repeat the outrage, she shoots him and manages to get his body into the sea. Later she meets mysterious American Harry Dobbs [Charles Bronson] who seems to know all about her crime. He is looking for a lunatic asylum escapee who has stolen $60,000 in US army funds. Their explosive relationship develops into mutual if fierce respect. Then Mellie hears that another woman has been accused of the murder...
