Synopsis

In 1944 on a small Pacific island a Japanese Naval Officer (TOSHIRO MIFUNE) looks around the island he alone has inhabited and sees a yellow life raft near the beach. It belongs to a US Marine Fighter (LEE MARVIN) whose plane has been shot down offshore.
The two eventually face each other-both wary and uncertain as to what the other might do. Finally they make a truce and build a raft to try and reach a group of distant islands. The voyage is a nightmare of storms and burning sun and the two men are all but deranged when they finally sight land.

"Hell in the Pacific" has an explosive conclusion as the men-both patriotic-come back to reality.
