Synopsis
"FIDDLER ON THE ROOF" is the magnificent movie musical version of the long-running, prize-winning Broadway and London hit show. Set in the Ukraine in 1905, the action is centred on the inhabitants of a small village in the days of the Jewish pogroms. The songs and dances of TOPOL and a brilliant international cast make this a treat for everyone... In Anatevka, the local milkman Teyve (TOPOL) is more concerned with the marriages of his many daughters than the current political climate. The eldest girl rejects the husband suggested by Yenta (MOLLY PICON) the matchmaker, in favour of the humble tailor she loves. Another daughter decides to settle for a political activist and a life in Siberia; while the youngest girl marries outside the Jewish faith. With the passing years, the mounting persecution of the residents of Anatevka results in an edict whereby they are told to sell their goods, leave their families and disperse within three days. But Teyve never allows his optimism to abandon him even at the climax... TOPOL makes the role of Teyve entirely his own, with the superb support of NORMA CRANE, LEONARD FREY, MOLLY PICON, PAUL MANN, ROSALIND HARRIS, MICHELLE MARSH and NEVA SMALL. The musical score is memorable for such classic numbers as "If I Were A Rich Man", "Teyve's Dream", "Do You Love Me?", and many more. The haunting rooftop violin solo played by Isaac Stern is another unforgettable highlight of the magical musical which is "FIDDLER ON THE ROOF".
