Synopsis

A tremendous world-class field with a battery of top Americans, yet this Championship is so nearly won by a relative unknown, All the swings and changes in fortune during this dramatic Open are seen in this film through the eyes of three men; Peter Alliss the commentator, and Michael McDonnell the golf writer, both working at the championship, and Bill Simpson the actor of "Doctor Finlay" fame, their contributions complemented by the expert camera work of the TWI mobile crews. The first hero is Bobby Clampett, the twenty-two year old American who has never won a big tournament but who sets a course record and achieves a mammoth 6-stroke lead at the half-way stage; the harrassing story of his downfall is graphically portrayed. On the last day the championship looks wide open and with six holes to play it looks certain to be won by Nick Price, a relatively obscure South-African - but that assessment is exploded when the great Tom Watson, three times a winner, brings out his skills and when the pressure gets to Price, Oosterhuis, Lyle, Nicklaus, Ballesteros, Palmer... these and others are among the big names who also feature in this exciting official film.
