In covent [sic] schools the world is apparently still in order-the girls pray and work, and go to confession regularly, and the pious nuns watch over discipline and order. But is that world really in such perfect order as it seems?
The attempted suicide of Helga, a girl in her final year, raises doubts in the mind of a sexual psychologist. Retained by Helga's father, he discovers that she was drugged and deflowered by a Lesbian teacher in the convent infirmary. Helga's boy friend, who was suspected of being responsible. is then disillusioned and withdraws from her. No wonder that the nuns are at a loss for an explanation—what is forbidden simply cannot be. Sex is synonymous with original sin, and if morals begin to totter, then faith is in jeopardy. And so they make do with taboos and prohibitions instead of giving practical help. This is demonstrated by various cases. Even the junior girls get themselves hot with "forbidden" sex games and are sure that at fifteen they know all the answers.
Eva Maria, who still believes in "pure love", gets a crush on Father Johannes, the convent's preacher and confessor, and then, disappointed, seeks consolation in the arms of a precocious schoolmate.
Antonia, haunted by a traumatic childhood experience, attempts to seduce a young nun. Two eighteen-year olds, Ines and Gudrun, driven by sexual curiosity, fall prey to two friends who first get the girls drunk and then rape them. When the two are to be expelled by the Mother Superior, Father Johannes tries to intervene. But his pleas are not heard until it is almost too late.
The mother of fifteen-year old Towe, known in the convent only as the "cashier", suddenly appears to take her daughter out of school. Business is bad and she hopes with Towe's help to attract new clients. In despair Towe turns to the Mother Superior, but the "reverend Mother" cannot and will not understand her. Not until the girl takes to flight and has an accident is a turning point reached…
Prayers alone are ineffectual, if they are not supported by practical help, as Father Johannes says. Outside a new group of girls are waiting to start their first year at the convent school.
