Synopsis
The 1983 Open Championship, in many respects, was as exciting as any in the 112 year history of this greatest of all golf events. Turnberry 1977, with its last day shoot-out between Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus, was hailed as the classic, but Royal Birkdale 1983 saw not two men but a dozen in contention for the title right up to the closing stages. At one time, near the end of the four-day Championship, two strokes separated ten golfers. Moreover, those ten included some of the greatest names in the world of golf: Lee Trevino, Hale Irwin, Tom Watson, Andy Bean, Raymond Floyd and Craig Stadler from the United States, Australians David Graham and Graham Marsh... and Britain's Nick Faldo who throughout the championship had looked a possible surprise winner. In the end, in front of record crowds, it was Watson who triumphed again - retaining his title and securing his fifth Open victory and putting him in line to challenge Harry Vardon's record of six wins. This historic championship is faithfully and dramatically portrayed by the TransWorld International cameramen with narration by actor Frank Windsor and commentary by Peter Alliss.
