Neil Innes and Eric Idle's stellar parody of the Beatles tells the story of 'the prefab four' - Dirk McQuickly, Stig O'Hara, Ron Nasty and Barry Wom - four lads from Rutland who shook the world with albums like A Hard Day's Rut, Ouch, Tragical History Tour, Yellow Submarine Sandwich and Sgt Rutter's Only Darts Club Band, stoked controversy by claiming to be bigger than Rod (Stewart, who would not be popular for another four years) and publicly admitting to taking tea (Indian tea, and biscuits) before breaking up in a welter of lawsuits. Innes provides not only the uncannily accurate music but also a killer Lennon impersonation, George Harrison turns up as a reporter and Henry Woolf is Arthur Sultan, the table-tapping guru of Bognor. Paul McCartney's comment on the Rutles? "No comment". My comment? Eric Idle's finest hour, by a long shot.
