Kate (Kathleen Beller) hears her father is missing, believed dead from his North Woods home. Her lover Joe (Joseph Bottoms) accompanies her to the northern wilderness to search for him. David Joe's brother and his wife Anna join the trip but tension quickly builds up as the foursome are dangerously mismatched. Once at her father's remote island home, the troubles begin. David's perverse attempts to seduce Kate repulse her while her obsession with the search endangers her romance with Joe. Joe, frustrated by her increasing rejection of him, turns to the willing Anna for sexual comfort. Kate finds a map of the further lakes at her father's home amid believes her father to be there, but the demands and perils of the outer wilderness begin to overwhelm them and when their canoe overturns they lose all their equipment...
