Synopsis

The story of three consenting adults in the privacy of their own home
This brilliant, and in its time controversial, film stars Beryl Reid as an ageing lesbian actress who plays Sister George - everybody's favourite nurse in a long-running TV soap-opera. She lives with her lover Alice played by Susannah York. When TV executive Coral Browne reveals that Sister George is to be 'written out of the script' the utterly type-cast actress becomes frantic. Her stifling relationship with Alice bursts from suppressed hysteria into a frenzy of jealous accusations, outrageous behaviour, heavy drinking and despair. This hard-hitting film pulls no punches in its frank treatment of lesbianism and Sister George's pitiful decline, stage death and final humiliation.
