John Gielgud heads an auspicious cast in this classic Hitchcock suspense drama based on the first of Somerset Maugham's exciting stones of Ashenden, a name that ranks with Drummond, Hannay and Bond. Ashenden is sent to Switzerland to eliminate a German spy. He is joined by Elsa, who pretends to be his wife, and a Mexican known as The General. They visit a key informant - but find him dead. The fast action that follows involves Ashenden in a fake funeral, a mountainside murder, a riverbank cafe rendezvous, an ambush in a chocolate factory, and a spectacular train crash.
