Synopsis
Jack Charlton's down-to-earth common sense and great good humour make him the ideal guide in this series. In each programme he meets experts who show us their gear and explain their tactics in one type of fishing. So the series takes us entertainingly and instructively from basic river coarse fishing and the thrills of sea wreck fishing to every angler's ultimate ambition - salmon fishing in Scotland, where Jack shows us he is as skilled on the river bank as on the football field. 3: Sea Wreck Fishing. Fishing from a boat over the torpedoed remains of a wartime wreck in the English Channel is among the most thrilling forms of angling. In this programme, Jack goes afloat off the south Devonshire coast in search of the deep-sea fish that live around the wrecks. After catching mackerel for bait, skipper Lloyd Saunders expertly locates the wreck lying in 40 fathoms of water, using his Decca Navigator system; and the party tackle up to catch pollack, red bream, ling and conger. First Jack learns how to use live sandeel for pollack, before the anglers switch to artificial eels. When the tide slackens the ling come on the feed. But Jack is determined to catch a conger eel, one of the sea's most ferocious predators. And the fish duly obliges after a hard tussle. A change to lighter tactics brings the handsome red bream. On a summer's day, when the smooth sea stretches to the horizon in a carpet of blue, Jack and his ea-angling friends make full use of the perfect weather to fill the fish box. The talk is of big fish, with plenty of friendly rivalry as to who will catch the heaviest. And there's not a sea-sickness tablet in sight!
