The year is 1815 and the Bourbon monarchy has just been reinstated in France. A young Englishman, Robert Terrence, travels to Paris with his Irish manservant, Sean, in search of the adventures he has dreamed about during an uneventful and isolated childhood. When the pair collide with the sinister black coach of the beautiful Elga and her evil husband, the Count St Alyre, who was rumoured to have died in the Bastille years before, Robert is drawn into a dangerous intrigue. After a series of unexplained murders, and despite Sean's warnings, he finds himself inextricably involved in a nightmarish and potentially deadly situation where the boundaries between illusion and reality disappear.
