Peter Penrose, sent to a new Bomber Command station in 1942, unexpectedly finds himself in a turmoil of new loves and relationships made complex by the uncertainties of war. The call of duty, the loss of close comrades, his own fears for the future - all serve to deepen his gloom. But he must learn to live with his misgivings.
